THE CHALLENGE

Stress is the outcome. Pressure is the source !

Most modern organisations today have excellent policies and resources for Stress. In crisis, employees know they have at least some protection and support if they find themselves overwhelmed. 


But Stress in most cases, is not the beginning of the story. Stress is an outcome. It's source is pressure,  steadily developing across work and life, accumulating over time before eventually becoming visible through declining wellbeing, behaviour, decision-making, resilience, recovery, and performance.  


People experience Pressure every day, from work, relationships, finances, health, family, major life events, and countless other demands competing for time, energy, attention, and emotional resource. 


Humans are designed to adapt to Pressure. When demands increase, the body and mind automatically respond to help maintain effective functioning.

However, when demands persist, accumulate, or exceed available Capacity, Pressure can begin to influence behaviour, decision-making, recovery, resilience, wellbeing, and performance, too.


The challenge is not a lack of Stress support.  The challenge is helping people understand Pressure, where it comes from, how it accumulates, how it affects them, and how to recognise when adaptive functioning begins to decline. 


Very often early deterioration is difficult to see, but over time recurring patterns begin to emerge:

  • reduced resilience

The Hidden Performance Risk: The Strain Visibility Gap

Most organisations recognise Human Performance deterioration only once visible decline becomes difficult to ignore. By that point, performance consistency, judgement, emotional regulation, and decision quality may already be materially affected.


One of the most important hidden pressure states is Strain - the point at which sustained adaptive functioning begins to become less stable, even though outward performance may still appear broadly intact.
